White House to hire attorney Ty Cobb to manage Russia investigation response

Even before receiving the full intelligence briefings on what the Russians did - and it appears that the intelligence community has proof that Putin personally ordered the election meddling - he showed his awareness of the Russian role in July 2016 when he called on the Kremlin to hack Hillary Clinton's emails. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports that despite their differences, the two presidents seemed to have formed a bond.

Trump's aides claim he was tough on Russian President Vladimir Putin when they met in Hamburg, Germany.

The email said the information was coming courtesy of "Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump". The procession was led by American troops. Then, it was to hear information about Clinton. His administration is even lobbying to water down in the House a sanctions bill passed 97-2 by the Senate.

"Our energy would be much more expensive", Trump told the Christian Broadcasting Network's founder, Pat Robertson. The success of this one, he said, is "because President Putin and President Trump made the deal, and it's held".

ELIANA JOHNSON: Great to be here. Either way, the president is not treating this with the seriousness that an attack on our democracy deserves.

SHAPIRO: Joining us now to discuss this evolving story and more from the week in politics is E.J. Dionne of The Washington Post and the Brookings Institution. Anybody would be in the frame of mind of eagerness to collude with a foreign government offering incriminating information on their political opponent. How important is this development?

DIONNE: Exactly. We should've been there.

Trump's mention of "the Russian hoax story" comes as revelations about Donald Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, during the 2016 campaign raise new questions about whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to tilt the election in Trump's favor. And the fact is Trump's legal team is top lawyer Marc Kasowitz and Alan Garten, the chief legal officer of the Trump organization, were informed about this in the third week of June.

APOLLINE DE MALHERBE: (Through interpreter) Macron doesn't want Trump to become too isolated. CNN reported on Friday that a representative of Emin and Aras Agalarov, the Russian family who asked Goldstone to arrange the meeting, may also have been there. There's a diplomatic aspect, but there's also an economic aspect that Macron never forgets.

In all, Bharara's office reimbursed Prevezon $50,365.72 for bringing three people from Russia to New York City from Oct. 13 to Oct.16, 2015 for depositions. The idea is so inane that by the end of the day even Trump had disowned it, leaving his Treasury secretary, Steven T. Mnuchin, who had loyally called the cybersecurity partnership "a very significant accomplishment for the president", twisting in the wind.

BEARDSLEY: "Yes, of course it was the right thing", he says. "I don't like everything America does, but they're the ones who keep the peace in the world". The scheme quickly snowballed into one of the biggest corruption scandals of Putin's tenure. I spoke to Rob Goldstone about this some months ago.
