Maine Republican leader keeps pressure on embattled governor

02 Septembre 2016, 11:01 | Troy Powers

ME legislative leaders are set to meet on Thursday to discuss whether to push for the resignation of Governor Paul LePage, a week after he left an obscenity-laden voicemail for a lawmaker who had criticized him for making racially charged comments. This allegedly caused Rep.

Facing pressure from his Democratic counterparts to pursue "corrective action", LePage said, instead, that, along with his wife and children, will seek "spiritual guidance" on the issue.

Last week, the governor left an obscene message on the voicemail of a Democratic legislator and accused minorities of driving Maine's heroin crisis.

It's surreal. From this, it was thought that Governor LePage was going to resign and be gone. "Again, it's up to the individual (senators) to decide if he has met that expectation and if they are comfortable with the fact that this is not going to continue". In a press conference on Wednesday (31 August), LePage said: "Maybe in my mind it is semantics, but in his mind, after talking to him it was clear that there was a real difference". Drew Gattine on Thursday after a reporter allegedly told the governor Gattine called LePage a racist. Trump said he has a "tremendous feeling" for Mexican-Americans, explaining that not only does he have several friends of Mexican descent, but he has also employed "tremendous numbers" of Mexican-Americans in the United States.

"The governor is not mentally able to serve and needs to resign", House Majority Leader Jeff McCabe and Assistant Majority Leader Sara Gideon said in a joint statement late on Tuesday.

"I will not resign", he said Wednesday.

LePage initially said his outburst was justified because Gattine called him a racist - something Gattine has denied.

The governor's office released a statement Wednesday apologizing. "I would point it right between his eyes, because he is a snot-nosed little runt and he has not done a damn thing since he's been in this Legislature to help move the state forward".

It concluded with closing arguments on Wednesday, and jurors took less than a day to return a guilty verdict. Harry Burkhart, 29, objected to the verdict, which carries a potential prison sentence of almost 90 years.

You might remember that the Republican governor left a remarkably vulgar message for Democratic Maine Rep.

Fredette and Republican Senate President Mike Thibodeau met with LePage on Monday. And I think that's why we are all struggling. "I would like to talk to you about your comments about my being a racist, you (obscene term)". He said he keeps photos of drug dealers arrested in the state in a binder and said it shows 90 percent of them "are black and Hispanic people from Waterbury, Connecticut; the Bronx; and Brooklyn".

In 2014, according to the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Service, 1,211 people were arrested for selling or making drugs in ME and 170 were black.
